Question: My passport expired on 6/2/2012. I am pretty sure that I had it renewed. Now I have misplaced it and cannot find passport anywhere. Will I have to renew my passport again? Can I get a duplicate passport?
Answer: The State Department will not issue you a duplicate passport. If you are not sure if you renewed your passport, you can apply for a passport record. This will ensure you if you already renewed your passport. There is a $50 fee for the passport record and can take up to 6 weeks to process.
If you find out that you did not apply for a renewal of your passport, you can renew it via mail. You must complete form DS-82, you will need your current passport, 2 passport photographs, and the payment for fees.
If you are unsure that you did not renew your passport and that it is lost, then, you will not be eligible to renew via mail. You must contact the National Passport Information Center and report the passport as lost. You must appear in person to apply for a new passport.
