Question: My girlfriend lives in Spain and I will be visiting her this summer. My trip is on July 5, 2014. I am 17 years old and I wanted to know if I can travel to Spain even though my passport will be expiring one month after trip.
Can I use my current passport? Will I need my parents to renew my new passport?
Answer: Your passport is valid until the last day of expiration. However, you cannot travel to Spain with this passport. Spain is part of the Schengen Agreement. Which means, Americans can only enter Spain if their passports are valid 3 months after their time of stay.
You must go in person at a passport application acceptance facility with a complete DS-11 Form. Although your parents may not need to be there, you may need their consent.
So, if you want your passport in a rush, you can apply for an expedite service to speed the process up. The fee is $60 and takes 2-3 weeks.
Regular passport processing usually takes about 4-6 weeks to obtain a passport. The quickest way to obtain a passport is to visit your closest regional passport agency. Or employ a professional expediter to submit your application for you.
