San Juan Passport Agency

REGIONAL OFFICEIf you were born in Puerto Rico or a naturalized US citizen, you are not required to present a US passport when travelling in the United States to include Alaska, the Virgin Islands, Hawaii, and other US territories. However, if you suddenly have the need to travel internationally in less than two weeks but do not have a US passport yet, then you are eligible to apply for a new passport or get a passport renewal at the San Juan Passport Agency. You can only obtain an appointment for this agency if you can present proof of your emergency travel.

Making an appointment at any passport agency is free of charge, so do not pay anyone claiming that he or she can get you an appointment quickly. The only fees you have to pay are the application fees and $60 to expedite your application. This does not apply to your decision to use an outside expediting service which you can always choose to do if you do not want to handle the details yourself.

All requests for appointments have to be made through the National Passport Information Center. You can call their office at 1-877-487-2778. Requests for appointments are accepted 24 hours a day. Once you are given the date for your appointment, keep this in mind and prepare all the documents you need to submit.

Steps to take when getting your expedited U.S. passport

What to Bring at Your Appointment

Once you have confirmed your appointment, you need to arrive to the agency ahead of your scheduled time. Remember that going through the security screening can take some time, especially if there are many applicants on the day you arrive. Thus, it is important to be at the agency at least 30 minutes before your appointment.

Bring all required documents to include proof of travel and your appointment confirmation number. Make sure you have filled out all of the forms completely. If your reason for travel is a medical or death emergency, you have to present proof of the emergency such as a death certificate or a medical certificate from a physician.

Be sure to have the exact amount needed to file and expedite your application. Payment for the application and expediting fees can be made in the form of cash, debit or credit card, money order, or bank draft. The application and expediting fees are non-refundable even if you are not qualified to get a passport.

What to Do at Your Appointment

Keep in mind that you will be going through metal detectors the minute you enter the building. Do not bring anything that can trigger the alarms such as weapons or sharp metal objects. Once you check-in at the information desk, you have to provide your appointment confirmation number or your Social Security number to validate your appointment.

Just like other passport agencies in the United States, the San Juan Passport Agency follows a no late appointments policy. If you arrive 15 minutes after your scheduled time, your slot is voided and you will lose your appointment. You will have to reschedule at a later date. Remember that those who have been issued appointment confirmations are the only ones that are allowed to enter the premises. Your companion will have to wait outside until you are done with the process.

To make sure that you comply with all requirements of your expedited application for a new passport.

If you have immediate travel plans and need to get a passport quickly, this can easily be done by personally taking a trip to the San Juan Passport Agency.

In the event that you cannot head over to the agency yourself, there is still another option. A private passport expediting company can help in situations when you cannot personally appear at the agency because of work or other personal reasons. A reputable company like Fastport Passports will have the authorization to process your passport application on your behalf and you can still get your passport in a quick amount of time.
