Spread out across 320-acres of land and in the middle of two large cities, 180 miles south of Chicago and about 140 miles northeast of St. Louis, sits EIU. Eastern Illinois University Study Abroad is a popular option as EIU offers 583 program options in 303 locations and in 56 countries on 6 continents! Therefore, EIU prides itself on its ‘family’ feel that is relevant in all things they do. This adds to the success of the faculty-led study abroad trips. Also, other popular trips include an EIU Exchange Program, AIFS, and API trips.

EIU’s Study Abroad Mission Statement: The Office of Study Abroad is dedicated to providing affordable, high quality international academic experiences to eligible students, allowing them to develop the knowledge and cross-cultural skills necessary for leadership in an increasingly global economy. These experiences include approved short-term and long-term study, intern, field and practical opportunities throughout the world. Also, all contributing to a student’s EIU degree and grade point average.

Eastern Illinois University encourages students to study abroad. The institution works hard to ensure this is a possibility for students at all stages of their collegiate career. For that reason, there are 583 programs available to students! Thus, the hardest part will be choosing where to go and what to study!

EIU Exchange Program

The EIU Exchange Program is in 9 countries which are Australia, Cyprus, Ecuador, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
General benefits to the Exchange Program are that the application procedure is simplified. So, the two universities have a relationship and work together to make it simple for you to get abroad. This program also guarantees that you will have an accommodation if the application was on time. Some countries offer a tutoring program which is essentially like a student helper to give you assistance settling into the foreign country of your choice. This program also can offer an English Language Program to ensure there is not a language barrier when you begin your studies.

AIFS Program

EIU works closely with AIFS, the premium provider of study abroad programs helping over 1.5 million students study abroad since its creation in 1964. This type of study abroad is thought of as “all-inclusive” as it covers both things you remember and forget about when planning study abroad. Some things included in this program are the program fees, tuition, and housing. Other forgotten essentials that are inclusive are meal plans, insurance, excursions, and tours.

API Programs

Eastern Illinois University Study Abroad is also offered through API programs which are focused on transforming students lives by providing enriching academic and cross-cultural experiences. These type of intimate experiences teach students cultural sensitivity. Also, an overall better global understanding of the nature of our contemporary world. API is selective when choosing their partner universities, thus showing EIU’s quality programs.

With this program students have the option to add to their professional experience by utilizing API’s connections of partners with local organizations and universities to offer internships, work, teach and volunteer options.
