George Washington University Study Abroad Program

Based on the 2011-2012 academic school year statistics, more than 50% of George Washington (GW) University students study abroad prior to graduation. In that year there were nearly 1,200 undergraduate students abroad!

George Washington University, located in Washington, D.C., offers study abroad opportunities in Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, Australia/New Zealand, Middle East and North America as well as in Europe. It is evident that the university offers a stronger program than others in the details of GW programs. The university offers a Focus on Fall Abroad Community (FOFAC) program for students who have studied abroad. This student group provides support and insight into cultural immersion both before and after study abroad trips.

GW Study Abroad Programs

George Washington University approved provider study abroad programs can be found in 60 countries around the world! These design courses are for American students at centers and institutions through direct enrollment. GW also offers students internship, independent research, and educational excursions as a part of their study abroad program.

With over 25 program providers that are affiliated with GW, the university is able to offer students a wide range of programs and locations for study abroad. Check out what additional programs GW works with to provide the very best in study abroad programs.

GW staff try to make studying abroad as simple as possible for students. Application support, pre-departure advice, and assistance with transfer credit upon students return are all services that the GW staff provides. While abroad, the university still provides support by offering cultural excursions, and an orientation while overseas.

Undergraduate Exchange Programs

The GW Undergraduate Exchange Program allows students to choose between any of the 40 exchange partners from around the world through direct enrollment. This program has a unique way to familiarize students with the country they choose.

Prior to their arrival to the host country, GW offers students an opportunity to meet with the exchange students from their future host country and institute to learn about everyday life and culture. Here is when students have unfiltered time to ask questions about the academic and cultural differences in their host country.

Global Bachelor’s Program

Originally, the Global Bachelor’s Program was for top students in the Columbian College, Elliot School, and the School of Business. Its creation allow prestigious students to integrate study abroad into their GW studies. Upon completion of this program, students will earn a Global Bachelor’s designation on their GW transcript.

Students begin this journey by attending one of the most prestigious universities in China, Fudan University in Shanghai. These Global Bachelor’s students will work and learn alongside Chinese and other international students. This opportunity gives students the chance of a lifetime to network with peers around the world.

Following the Shanghai semester, students will choose two more international experiences outside of China. It may be choosing to take part in a 10-week full-time international internship in the summer, or another study abroad program.

Short Term Programs

Whether it’s summer, winter, fall, or spring that students want to travel abroad GW makes that dream a possibility with their Short Term Programs. These programs range from 1-6 weeks. Past trips have been taken to South Africa, Paris, Shanghai, and Panama to highlight a few.

Passports & Visas

George Washington University Study Abroad Programs all require a valid passport. In order for a passport to be valid, it must not be expired and also must not expire up to 6 months after you return from your trip. Passports are estimated to take about 4-6 weeks to process, though private and trusted expedited services can be purchased if there is proof of departing in a short notice. You can get your passport as quick as 24 hours, but extra fees will apply.

Student visas and visas, in general, vary from country to country as well as the planned duration of your trip. If you need passport or visa help, please contact us for more info.
