The Illinois State University Study Abroad Program understands the importance of study abroad and the lifelong positive impact it leaves on students. So, in the 2016-2017 academic school year, ISU has sent 589 students abroad! With several strong programs to choose between, students can choose to gain international experience from their Intern Abroad Program or Service Learning Programs in addition to a standard study abroad trip.

ISU has a strong study abroad presence on their campus. Thus, students who have entertained the idea but need the push can find that gentle nudge here! ISU’s study abroad website is an ideal tool for students who need information. With constantly updated information, video testimonials, student blogs, and the option to request a presentation, it is difficult for students to say “No”.

ISU offers many opportunities for students to enhance their resume and obtain skills for today’s global marketplace via study abroad programs. Hence, there is something to suit every type of student!

Affiliate Programs

ISU works closely with several internationally recognized organizations to provide this option. These programs are not administrated through ISU and they offer additional locations and subjects to choose from. Applicants must apply through ISU as well as the affiliate company. ISU Study Abroad works with American Institute of Foreign Study (AIFS), International Studies Abroad (ISA), CEA Global Education, and USAC to provide these options for students.

Direct Enroll Programs

This type of program allows ISU students to become a student of any of the chosen host universities. While they take courses that will earn them credits at ISU towards their degree. Direct Enroll Programs are best for those who do not want to have their hand held while studying abroad. Students can best be immersed into the local student and city culture this way. These programs are offered in the regular semester as well as in the summer.

Exchange Program

ISU has made an agreement with chosen universities abroad to exchange students between the universities without paying additional tuition. This leads to the overall cost of these programs to be less than many tuition paying programs because of the agreement between the two universities. In short, students pay an Exchange Fee. This fee covers the cost of student service fees at ISU while an exchange student from the partner university will pay student fees abroad.

Other popular and unique to Illinois State University Study Abroad programs include Intern Abroad, Service Learning Programs, and Student Teaching Abroad.
