Through the St. Lawrence University study abroad program more than 50% of students study abroad during their time at SLU. The Center of International and Intercultural Studies (CIIS), or study abroad department, works hard to encourages students to take part in a cultural experience regardless if it’s short term, a semester long, or in a foreign country like China!

With five options within the U.S. and 23 options internationally, students of all major studies have options in study abroad to extend their intellectual growth further than what is offering at a home university. St. Lawrence University works to cultivate a lifelong appreciation of cultures and peoples worldwide.

St. Lawrence University Study Abroad Programs

With the goal in mind to enrich St. Lawrence students studies, the university offers 27 off-campus programs in over 20 different countries worldwide. So, this is in addition to the eight semester/year long programs that St. Lawrence University operates and offers.

Additionally, programs offered by St. Lawrence send students to Kenya, Bordeaux France, New York City, London, and Spain! More options are available to students by the universities ties with partner programs. Non- SLU programs include studies in Australia, Canada, various locations in China, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Denmark, India, Italy, Jordan, New Zealand, Thailand, Trinidad and domestic locations in Washington D.C. and Nashville Tennessee.

China Program

A highlighted partner program is the affiliation between SLU and the Council on International Education Exchange (CIEE). Through the CIEE China Program, SLU students can spend a semester in Shanghai at the East China Normal University. Hence, the university hosts about 100 program participants from US colleges and other international students.

Shanghai is China’s largest city and here students have the best opportunity to get involved in the interesting Chinese culture. Through the SLU China Program, students are to stay with a host family and take a Chinese language course during their time here. This is more for the students benefit as it will assist them in feeling accepted into the culture. Field trips and lectures are integrated into the curriculum where students will visit museums, temples, and other sites.

Passports & Visas

St Lawrence University Study Abroad students must have a valid passport prior to departure. So, obtaining or ensuring you have a valid passport is the first step before traveling abroad. In order for a passport to be valid, it must not be expired and also must not expire up to 6 months after you return from your trip. Passports are estimated to take about 4-6 weeks to process. Though private and trustworthy, expedited services are available if there is proof of departing in a short notice.

A student visa, in general, vary from country to country, as well as how long you are planning to stay. So, please contact us if you need a passport or visa specialist to assist you with the process.
