Study Abroad by Program: AIFS

History of AIFS

Since its conception in 1964, there have been more than 1.5 million students who traveled abroad with American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS). With their innovative programs that are constantly evolving, AIFS stands out from the competition as they are a ‘one stop shop’ when it comes to study abroad programs. The programs include costs and have details planned that students may overlook such as airfare, housing, and insurance to name a few.

For years both students and employees have been choosing AIFS. In both 2011 and 2015, AIFS was named one of the top places to work in Connecticut. In 1965, dating back to the first group of AIFS high school students to study abroad, the program attracted a total of 1,500 students! It wasn’t until the 1970’s that students were able to travel internationally to Europe, Asia, and South America! Now, some 50 years later, AIFS celebrates bringing the world together and sending students all over the globe!

AIFS operates 10 global locations and has program offerings in 29 countries worldwide. Also, AIFS participants from more than 60 nations participate in our programs based in the U.S. In addition, they have an Au Pair in America program to safely send international students to the U.S. for an almost 2 month trip with a host family.

Benefits of Choosing AIFS

AIFS understands that with each changing year comes new students with new desires and travel trends. This program is constantly reflecting on what they do offer and what they can offer to not only appeal to their participants but to excite them!

One of the major benefits to choosing AIFS programs is that it truly is an all-inclusive study abroad program. Gap Year Program

High school graduates have a lot of options when deciding what their next steps are. More times than not this process can be overwhelming to young adults, but it doesn’t have to be! Gap years are a highly encouraging next step for many reasons. AIFS believes they can offer programs and international opportunities to make you a more competitive applicant after you return for colleges in the U.S. as traveling and learning internationally proves adaptability and flexibility.

College credits are even earned while abroad on this gap year. Therefore, it is not just a wasted year. Students can learn another language and culture by taking intensive language classes in the host country! Above all the confidence and new skills acquired abroad, gap year students will gain insight into themselves, academic interests, and return to the U.S. with a global knowledge they might not receive going to a university or trade school straight from high school.

Passports & Visas

One of the most frequently asked questions from students planning to study abroad is regarding passports and visas. Any international trip requires a proper passport. Passports must be valid for up to six months after the return date of your trip. Passports can be renewed if expired or simply purchased and processed prior to leaving. Typically passports take 4-6 weeks to process, but expedited services are available if students need it ASAP.

Student visas are generally required when students study abroad, though this depends on the country they are traveling to as well as how long they will be gone. For more information about your specific trip and visa needs please contact your study abroad program or the U.S. Embassy. If you think you need a passport processed fast, please drop us a line. We have a network of passport specialists that can help you get your passport as quickly as 24 hours.
