Post Office Services
The post office offers two passport processing services. The first is routine processing. With regular processing, the time the process takes is 4-6 weeks from the time application was submit. This time is not guarantee since there can be factors that can slow the process. For example, the processing takes longer when there is a high amount of application submitted at the same time. Also, in climate weather can increase the processing time.
The other is expedited services. Expedited service decreases the processing time in half. So, an application gets the process in 2-3 weeks. But, to qualify for this option, you must demonstrate a need for a passport sooner than the average processing time. One way to show proof is a travel itinerary with departure date earlier than four weeks. Expedited services are usually recommended for getting a passport in emergency situations than for routine processing. To get a passport in a rush, expect to pay more in comparison to standard processing.
Other Acceptance Facilities
The post office is just one of many facilities that accept passport applications. The other acceptance facilities are courthouses, county clerk’s offices, and public libraries. The operating hours at these locations are not the same as the post office. The hours are less due to a slow number of applicants compared to the post office. There are fewer acceptance agents at the courthouse, county clerk’s office, and the library. Sometimes, there may be only one person, and this can increase the waiting time. Also, expedited passport services are not available. Going to any of these facilities will not decrease or increase the cost of an application; so, if one is nearest you, it would be best to submit your documents there if you are not in a rush.
